Police authorities in Oyo State have apprehended a grandfather for allegedly abducting his own granddaughter, merely a day old, and subsequently selling her to a baby factory in Abia State for the sum of N700,000. The arrest was part of a wider operation that resulted in the apprehension of five accomplices at the baby factory.
Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Adebola Hamzat, disclosed during a press briefing in Ibadan on Saturday that the shocking incident unfolded when the grandfather took advantage of the teenage mother, Sarah Chukwuka, and snatched her newborn baby girl on July 10. The grandfather, identified as the biological father of the teenage mother, cunningly deceived her by promising to hand the baby over to a caregiver.
The suspect’s apprehension was achieved after a thorough investigation led the authorities to his hideout in Ibafo, Ogun State. Upon interrogation, the grandfather confessed to the crime, revealing the sinister path he had taken. He detailed how he transported the infant to Abia State, where he struck a deal with the operator of a notorious baby factory located in Obehi, Okwa West Local Government Area. The transaction saw him selling the innocent child for a staggering N700,000.
A subsequent operation at the baby factory resulted in the capture of a female suspect named Bunmi and four additional accomplices. The authorities discovered a bundle of new birth certificates and equipment commonly used in labor rooms, pointing to the factory’s grim activities. The baby factory suspects were unable to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the parentage of the babies found within the facility.
In a bid to address the rising tide of criminal activities, Commissioner Adebola Hamzat also presented six other suspects linked to robbery, kidnapping, cultism, and car theft. These individuals were involved in a daring robbery that targeted a victim in Ibadan, where they brandished machetes, jack knives, and other dangerous weapons. The stolen loot included high-value items such as mobile phones, laptops, jewelry, and other valuables, amounting to millions of Naira.
The police commissioner further revealed that the suspects confessed to being responsible for a series of prior criminal activities across various locations in the capital city of Oyo State.
