In a tragic incident on Sunday, yet-to-be-identified gunmen ambushed and killed three police officers attached to the Dragon Patrol Team in Delta State, Nigeria. The attack occurred while the patrol team was conducting a routine stop and search duty along the Ughelli/Asaba Road, near the IDU Roundabout in Oleh, the headquarters of Isoko South Local Government Area.
According to police sources, the gunmen opened fire on the officers, resulting in the deaths of Inspector Monday Orowhigoh, Inspector Festus Obey, and a mobile policeman on escort duty. Additionally, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Chuks Ijeh sustained injuries during the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
A police signal titled “Incident Report-Attack / Murder On Dragon Police Personnel” provided further details of the incident. It revealed that the gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, emerged from Olomoro bush and began shooting sporadically at the patrol team. Following the attack, the assailants made away with the officers’ rifles and set fire to their patrol vehicle.
The bodies of the deceased officers were deposited at the mortuary of the general hospital in Oleh. The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident but indicated that further information was still being gathered.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the security challenges faced by law enforcement officers in certain regions of Nigeria.
