Gunmen have launched an attack on Ora, Ayetoro community within the Ekiti local government area of Kwara State, resulting in the abduction of several residents.
The incident unfolded on Monday when a group of nine gunmen, with four of them wearing masks, infiltrated the area, brandishing AK-47 rifles.
These abductors further targeted the palace of the local traditional ruler, Oba C.O Odeyemi, vandalizing his residence and looting his wife’s shop, belonging to Olori Odeyemi, carting away various items and cash.
Kayode Bayode, the Chairman of the local government, confirmed the incident, stating that the local vigilante groups have been mobilized and are collaborating with the police and other security agencies to secure the release of the victims.
Bayode provided further details, explaining, “They only destroyed the palace of our traditional rulers and looted indomie, spaghetti, and other items and cash from his wife’s shop because they were not around. As we speak this night, our men are on the trail of the kidnapper in the rain falling right now. On my part, I have provided three pump-action rifles to the vigilantes and ensure a steady supply of bullets for them to be able to confront the kidnappers. I am very optimistic that they will be rescued before the end of tomorrow (Friday).”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi SP, also verified the incident. He mentioned that security forces are collaborating with vigilantes and local hunters, and they have been deployed to the forested areas in an effort to secure the release of the abducted residents.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges facing various communities and the efforts of local authorities and security agencies to address and resolve such incidents.
