In a significant political development, Engr Onyiriuka Stanley Chike, the former Imo House of Assembly candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 election, has led over 1,000 of his supporters to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The political heavyweight, popularly known as “Chyko”, has pledged his support to the PDP’s governorship flagbearer, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, ahead of the November 11 polls.
Engr Onyiriuka Stanley Chike’s decision to switch sides comes after his impressive performance in the March general election, where he garnered significant support from the electorate in his constituency. In a statement on Tuesday, the politician highlighted his reasons for leaving the SDP, citing the need to rescue the state of Imo from insecurity, bad governance, greed, and harsh policies.
The politician firmly believes that Imo needs a people-oriented administration to bring about positive change and development. He sees Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the leader capable of ushering in this much-needed transformation. Onyiriuka’s move to the PDP represents a strategic effort to join forces with like-minded individuals in the fight against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
In his statement, Onyiriuka urged those working against the liberation of Imo to reconsider their stance and rally behind the restoration season that the upcoming gubernatorial poll represents. He stressed the importance of halting the killing of innocent youths and preventing the senseless destruction of homes in the state.
Describing the current APC administration as “very insensitive,” Onyiriuka pledged to continue mobilizing well-meaning Nigerians from the three zones to stand against the ruling party. His defection, along with the significant number of supporters joining him, adds momentum to the PDP’s campaign efforts as they prepare for the crucial governorship elections in Imo state.
