In response to the claims made by Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), the lawyer representing the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding the refusal of the office of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept a subpoena, INEC’s lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), has stated that the LP and Obi often resort to making excuses when they face difficulties in progressing with their case.
During the proceedings on Wednesday, when another member of the petitioners’ legal team announced the exhaustion of the documents they had for the day, Uzoukwu informed the court that they would have liked to continue, but the INEC Chairman’s office declined to accept the subpoena served on him to produce certain documents. Uzoukwu claimed that this development was hindering their progress in the case.
In response, Pinheiro highlighted that it has become a recurring pattern for the petitioners to seek someone to blame whenever they encounter obstacles and are unable to advance with their case. Pinheiro’s statement suggests that the LP and Peter Obi tend to find excuses rather than addressing the challenges they face during the legal proceedings.
It is important to note that the LP and Peter Obi are still contesting the outcome of the Presidential Election, in which the incumbent, Bola Tinubu, was declared the winner by INEC. The ongoing legal battle centers around the disputed election results, with the LP and its candidate seeking to challenge the validity of the declared outcome.
