In a recent update from the Kogi State office, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a fresh election date following the suspension of voting in several locations across the state. The most critical incident occurred in nine out of 10 wards in Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area (LGA), prompting a decisive response from the electoral body.*
Similar incidents were reported in Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi, and Okene, where a total of 16 polling units were affected. Results from these units have been accounted for in Form EC40G for the respective local government areas.*
However, in Ogori/Magongo LGA, only the results of Oshobane Ward II with eight polling units and 2,264 registered voters have been collated. Elections in the other nine wards, involving 59 polling units and 15,136 registered voters, remain suspended. In accordance with Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act 2022 and Clause 59 of INEC Regulations and Guidelines on the Conduct of Elections 2022, a fresh election is scheduled for Saturday, November 18, 2023, in the affected polling units.*
The decision to hold fresh elections is contingent upon the Returning Officer’s determination of the application of the Margin of Lead Principle. However, INEC emphasizes that this decision does not compromise their commitment to investigating any complicity in undermining the electoral process, with sanctions applied where necessary.*
The Commission reassures voters in Kogi State that their votes will continue to count, and their wishes will be respected. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner & Member of the Information and Voter Education Committee, reiterated this commitment in a statement released on Sunday, November 12, 2023.*
