The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it has received 215 case files from the Nigerian Police regarding electoral infractions during the 2023 general election. INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this disclosure during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from various states to review the general election.
Prof. Yakubu stated that the commission is partnering with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to prosecute the alleged electoral offenders. He mentioned that the NBA has provided 427 lawyers who will offer their legal services free of charge for the prosecution of these cases. The commission expressed gratitude to the NBA and its President, Yakubu Maikyau SAN, for their collaboration in this historic endeavor. Additionally, INEC is working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to prosecute cases related to vote buying and associated violations.
Furthermore, the INEC Chairman announced that the police report on the suspended Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Yunusa Ari, has been received, and appropriate actions will be taken against him.
Prof. Yakubu reiterated the commission’s commitment to its mandate and emphasized that it would not engage in disputes with observer groups or political parties regarding the conduct of elections. INEC has consistently maintained that it will refrain from joining issues with any party, particularly partisans.
Addressing the RECs, Prof. Yakubu stated that the purpose of the meeting was to reflect on the just-concluded 2023 General Election. He highlighted the importance of introspection, stocktaking, review, and evaluation following the election. The INEC Chairman acknowledged the diverse opinions expressed by political parties, candidates, observers, analysts, and the general public regarding various aspects of the elections held in February and March. He welcomed these opinions as long as they aim to enhance future election conduct and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
Prof. Yakubu emphasized that INEC’s approach has been to listen and learn from these opinions rather than engage in immediate public discussions after the election, noting that drawing lessons for improvement is the commission’s priority.
