Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the appointments of the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs). Jega expressed concerns over the perceived partisanship of some RECs and emphasized the need for a review of their appointments.
Approximately a month ago, President Tinubu nominated 10 RECs, a move that was subsequently confirmed by the Senate. However, the appointments have faced criticism, with accusations of some RECs being involved in partisan politics.
In response to the criticisms, Jega voiced his opinion on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. He highlighted the importance of reviewing the appointments, citing the potential negative signals it sends regarding the government’s commitment to improving the integrity of elections. Jega stressed that such a review is crucial for protecting the independence and impartiality of the election management body.
Jega’s advice comes amid growing concerns about the credibility and neutrality of the electoral process. He expressed the hope that President Tinubu would consider the recommendation to ensure that the electoral system maintains its integrity and public trust. Jega also suggested that the President might not have been fully informed about the details of the appointments, urging a reconsideration in the interest of fair and transparent elections.
