Villagers of Tudun Biri in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State have filed a lawsuit against the Federal Government, demanding ₦33 billion in compensation over recent airstrikes by the army that resulted in the deaths of over 100 people during a Maulud celebration. The suit, filed on December 8 before a Federal High Court in Kaduna, seeks to enforce the fundamental rights to life of the survivors.
The villagers, represented by Alhaji Dalhatu Salihu through their counsel Mukhtar Usman, are also requesting a published apology in at least three national dailies. Among the reliefs sought is a declaration that the aerial bombardment during the Islamic Maulud celebration violated the victims’ fundamental rights to life as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.
The incident, which occurred on December 3, 2023, prompted an investigation ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who emphasized that such massacres should not happen again. The lawsuit aims to address the alleged human rights violations and seek compensation for the affected villagers. No hearing date has been fixed for the case.
