Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State is taking steps to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano by proposing a bill to amend the Kano Emirates Law. This bill aims to abolish the additional four emirates that currently exist with first-class Emirs, thereby leaving only one first-class Emir in the state. The newly inaugurated Kano State House of Assembly, with Jibrin Falgore as the Speaker, is expected to prioritize this bill as its first official task.
According to sources, if the new law is passed, the current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, may be removed from his position to pave the way for Muhammadu Sanusi’s return to the throne. In 2019, former governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje had passed a law that curtailed the powers of the Emir of Kano, limiting Muhammadu Sanusi’s authority to oversee only ten out of the 44 local government areas.
Under the proposed bill, the Kano Emirate will consist of Kano Municipal, Tarauni, Dala, Nassarawa, and Fagge local government areas. The other four emirates and their respective local government areas, namely Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, will be incorporated back into the Kano Emirate, restoring the previous status.
The initiative to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi is championed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who shares a close relationship with Sanusi and is determined to restore the former glory of the Kano emirate. The bill is expected to be presented to the House on Thursday, where it will be read by the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini.
This move aligns with the sentiments expressed by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and a prominent figure in Kano politics. Kwankwaso had criticized the creation of the new emirates before the election, and Governor Yusuf’s government has embraced this stance, reversing several initiatives of the previous administration.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to fulfilling the expectations of the people of Kano, who voted for him with the vision of restoring the emirate’s former glory. By proposing the bill to reinstate Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano, the government aims to bring about significant changes and restore the traditional structure and prestige of the emirate.
