Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, known as ‘Abba Gida-Gida,’ has revealed details of an incident that occurred between him and the wife of the Director General (DG) of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Magaji Bichi, prior to the 2023 general election.
Governor Yusuf disclosed that Bichi’s wife threatened to hinder his candidacy for Kano State governor in the 2023 elections. He made this revelation during an interaction with Islamic clerics at the Government House in Kano, seeking their support for his administration.
Earlier, there was a social media uproar surrounding a reported clash between Yusuf’s supporters, then as the governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the DSS DG’s wife at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano.
In a viral video clip posted by Rahma TV online, Governor Yusuf expressed his dismay that some Islamic clerics had gone on radio stations to blame him for the incident without having a clear understanding of what had transpired between him and Mrs. Bichi.
The Governor recounted the encounter, stating, “After DSS personnel molested our people, I met her to complain that they were beating us. She went berserk and started insulting me and my father. She said, ‘I swear, we will never allow you to become governor of Kano State.'”
Furthermore, Governor Yusuf alleged that the DSS DG’s wife prevented him from boarding a commercial plane despite having paid for his ticket. He also expressed disappointment that certain Kano clerics criticized him without hearing his side of the story, despite him being the victim in the incident.
During the gathering of clerics, Engr. Yusuf assured them of his respect for all religious leaders in the state. However, he cautioned that he would not tolerate unscrupulous criticisms of his government, urging the clerics to exercise fairness and listen to his perspective before making judgments.
