Amidst criticism, Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has staunchly defended the recent trip of northern governors to the United States, emphasizing its significance in seeking solutions to the pervasive insecurity plaguing the region.
The governors had faced backlash over their journey to the US, but Radda clarified that the visit was part of concerted efforts to address the escalating insecurity in the northern states. He explained that they were invited to engage in discussions aimed at finding lasting solutions to the prevailing challenges.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Governor Radda elaborated on the purpose of the trip, stating, “Ten governors were in the United States, Washington D.C., and we had a symposium with the United States Institute of Peace so that we can bring about ideas that will end insecurity that is worrying our people.”
He underscored the importance of the symposium, highlighting the extensive discussions and interactions with stakeholders over a three-day period. According to Radda, the engagement provided valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration on global peace and security initiatives.
Despite criticisms questioning the choice of the US as the venue for the meeting, Governor Radda clarified that the initiative originated from the United States Institute of Peace. He emphasized that the governors were invited to contribute to efforts aimed at addressing security challenges, rather than organizing the event themselves.
Governor Radda emphasized the importance of the US trip in offering fresh perspectives on the security issues afflicting the northern region, which has been grappling with rampant banditry, kidnapping, and other security concerns in recent years.
Addressing speculations of political motives behind the insecurity, Radda dismissed such hypotheses, attributing the root causes to injustice and poverty. He highlighted the need for holistic approaches to tackle these underlying issues and pave the way for sustainable peace and development in the region.
