Kwankwaso Denies Rift with Abba Yusuf, Says Kano Governor Runs His Administration Independently

Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed widespread speculations suggesting that he is secretly controlling the affairs of the state under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso emphasized that there is no conflict or power struggle between him and the governor, insisting that Governor Yusuf operates with complete autonomy.

He explained that their political relationship is built on mutual respect and trust, adding that Yusuf was carefully chosen to lead Kano long before the 2019 elections because of his competence and loyalty to the ideals of the NNPP.

“Before the 2019 elections, we assessed who was most qualified to lead Kano, and we chose Abba Kabir Yusuf. He is doing what is right, and I have no reason to interfere,” Kwankwaso said.

He described the rumours of him managing state contracts or dictating government policies as lies fabricated by political opponents seeking to create division within the NNPP.

Kwankwaso clarified that his role is purely advisory and only comes into play when the governor requests guidance on specific matters. He maintained that the party’s structure promotes independence, allowing every leader to perform their duties without external interference.

“Our system is built on respect and responsibility. Each person has their role, and nobody forces another to act against their duties. The governor is doing his job, and others are doing theirs,” he added.

The former governor further reiterated that there is no tension between him and other party members in Kano, stressing that their shared focus remains the peace, unity, and development of the state.

He called on supporters of the NNPP to ignore divisive narratives and remain committed to advancing good governance and people-oriented policies.
