The Labour Party (LP) continues to grapple with internal turmoil as factional National Publicity Secretary, Dr Abayomi Arabambi, warns the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to cease his attacks on President Bola Tinubu over the controversy surrounding Tinubu’s Chicago State University Diploma certificate.
Arabambi, addressing a world press conference in Abuja on Friday, expressed dissatisfaction with Obi’s public comments on the matter, describing them as “needless and unwarranted.” He urged Obi to refrain from taunting Tinubu and advised him to allow the Supreme Court of Nigeria to adjudicate and resolve the issue.
The factional spokesperson criticized Obi’s claims that the release of Tinubu’s academic records portrayed all Nigerians as criminals. Arabambi argued that such comments were baseless and unsubstantiated. He further emphasized that Obi, having submitted to Supreme Court jurisdiction, should await the court’s decision rather than resorting to self-help.
Arabambi condemned Obi’s engagement in what he called “Media Tragedy, rascality, and comedy,” asserting that it was an attempt to wage war against the President of Nigeria through intimidation.
Addressing the issue of Obi’s academic credentials, Arabambi, as the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, disclosed discrepancies in the name written on Obi’s academic certificate from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), compared to the names on his NYSC certificate and WAEC certificate.
He raised concerns about the differences in the names and challenged the authenticity of the documents submitted by Obi. Arabambi accused Obi of rushing through the party’s screening process and suggested that there were discrepancies in the information provided by Obi during the screening.
Arabambi denied being sponsored by the Presidency to oppose Obi and asserted that the Labour Party’s focus was on ensuring that Obi adheres to legal processes in prosecuting the petition against Tinubu.
The internal strife within the Labour Party adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing political landscape, with factions within the party expressing divergent views on critical issues. The public exchanges between party members underscore the challenges faced by the party in maintaining unity and coherence.
