The Labour Party has expressed a positive stance on the merger proposal put forth by the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar. The party sees Atiku’s call for opposition parties to unite as a good proposition to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In an interview, the acting National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, stated that Atiku’s call is a proposition that should be considered by every Nigerian. Ifoh emphasized the need for a true democracy in Nigeria and welcomed any proposition that aims to install democracy.
On the other hand, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) sees Atiku’s call as emotional and suggested that any merger should be in support of former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s presidential bid in 2027. The NNPP is not interested in a merger unless it supports Kwankwaso’s candidacy.
The APC responded to Atiku’s call, stating that the ruling party is not moved or threatened by it. The APC Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, dismissed the notion that Atiku and the PDP have the power to instill fear in the ruling party, describing the PDP as inconsequential in the Nigerian political landscape.
