Lagos, Nigeria – Lawyers in Lagos are calling on the judiciary to revamp its image and incorporate modern technology to enhance service delivery in the legal system.
In separate interviews on Thursday, a cross-section of lawyers expressed their expectations for improved service delivery from the judiciary in 2024. Bayo Akinlade, a former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikorodu branch, emphasized the need for transparency in dispensing justice. He commended the federal government for increasing the budget allocation to the judiciary and advised state governments to follow suit in bolstering their budgetary support for the state judiciary.
Ademola Owolabi, a partner at Adetokunbo Chambers, Lagos, advocated for the creation of state courts of appeal and state supreme courts to handle specific matters, such as marriages, chieftaincy, and residual issues. He described the existing system as cumbersome and suggested a “surgical operation” to streamline the judicial process. Mr. Owolabi urged the Attorney General of the Federation to explore this issue, especially with the Supreme Court having a full complement of justices.
Furthermore, Mr. Owolabi advised the attorney general and other judicial figures to brainstorm on incorporating technology into judicial administration, recognizing the potential benefits it could bring to the legal system.
Chibikem Opara, a partner at Justification Firm, Ikeja, called on the judiciary to restore its image, which has faced significant criticism in recent times. Mr. Opara emphasized the need for the judiciary to enhance service delivery and reduce the time it takes to handle cases. He stressed the importance of ensuring that justice is not only done but is also visibly demonstrated at all times and levels.
The collective call from these lawyers highlights the ongoing efforts and expectations for the judiciary to modernize its processes, embrace transparency, and leverage technology to improve overall service delivery in the legal system.
