In an exclusive interview on AriseTv, Obiora Okonkwo, the Spokesperson for the Airline Operators of Nigeria and Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, emphasized the need to reassess airfare pricing due to the escalating cost of operations. Okonkwo suggested that an air ticket for the Lagos to Abuja route should be priced at N250,000, reflecting the continuous surge in operating expenses.
Stressing the challenges faced by local operators, Okonkwo called for a special forex window facilitated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow airlines to access foreign exchange more easily. He appealed to the recently appointed Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, to collaborate with other governmental bodies in identifying and rectifying obstacles within the system that are exacerbating the current challenges.
Furthermore, Okonkwo expressed concern over the exorbitant cost of aviation fuel, attributing the high charges to speculative practices. He urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to intervene and stabilize the industry by curbing these practices.
Recognizing the critical role of the aviation sector, Okonkwo advocated for its classification as an essential industry in Nigeria. He cautioned against interference with the existing regulatory framework, emphasizing that stability and consistency were crucial.
Addressing the unique challenges faced by local operators dealing with currency disparities, Okonkwo urged the new minister not to tamper with existing regulations and institutional structures. He underscored the vulnerability of the industry to currency fluctuations and highlighted the need for a stable environment.
Okonkwo concluded his remarks by urging the aviation minister to uphold the existing regulatory system and carefully review recent appointments made before the end of the previous administration.
