In a revealing interview with radio talk show host Daddy Freeze, renowned legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Aare Afe Babalola, disclosed some significant legal fees he has charged from clients, shedding light on high-profile cases.
Babalola shared that on one occasion, he secured a remarkable $30 million for assisting the government in recovering $300 million from banks. In another instance, he charged the multinational company Mobile $5 million for an appeal case he handled in the 80s.
The legal icon confirmed the $5 million fee during the interview, recounting the negotiation process with Mobile. Despite initial resistance, Babalola held firm on his fee, stating, “That was what I would charge for the case.” Although Mobile attempted to negotiate, he stood his ground. However, after losing a case with another Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who charged significantly less, Mobile returned to Babalola, agreed to his original fee, and he subsequently won the case for them.
Responding to questions about other substantial legal fees, Babalola recalled a deal with the government where he agreed to a 10% commission upon recovering $300 million from a syndicate of banks embroiled in a dispute with the government. Babalola stated, “At the end of the day, I collected $300 million for them and, of course, 10% for me.”
The interview showcased Aare Afe Babalola’s expertise and success in handling high-stakes legal matters, establishing him as a prominent figure in the legal realm.
