In a thrilling encounter, Mamelodi Sundowns emerged victorious in the CAF Super Cup, defeating Wydad Casablanca with a 2-0 comeback in Pretoria. The win not only marked Sundowns’ inaugural title but also earned them a substantial prize of $4,000,000.
The South African side had faced a 2-1 defeat in the first leg, with Wydad enjoying a 2-1 advantage following a 79th-minute strike from Anas Serrhat. However, the tables turned dramatically in the return match on Sunday, as Sundowns secured a convincing 2-0 win on their home turf.
The first 30 minutes of the game saw both teams evenly matched, but just before halftime, Sundowns capitalized on a defensive lapse by Wydad. Goalkeeper Youssef Motie’s parry of Khuliso Mudua’s shot rebounded off Peter Shalulile’s leg, and Shalulile made no mistake in firing the ball into the net.
Despite Wydad’s coach, Adil Ramzi, making tactical substitutions to salvage the situation, Sundowns continued their dominance. Shalulile had another one-on-one opportunity early in the second half, but Motie managed to block the shot. However, Sundowns extended their lead as Audrey Modiba intercepted a miscued pass and skillfully placed the ball past Motie.
After the game, Peter Shalilule credited God and his teammates for the historic success. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged the team’s effort throughout the seasons in pursuit of the trophy.
“I will like to thank God first for making this opportunity possible because God isn’t a God of years but seasons. Throughout the seasons, we have been trying to get the trophy, and finally, he gave it to us. Wonderful experience, good teammates, a good day, and we glorify him for this amazing cup.”
In addition to etching their names in history, Mamelodi Sundowns secured a substantial financial reward of $4,000,000 for their triumph in the CAF Super Cup.
