In a significant development, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has officially stepped down from his position as the Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). This decision came after a crucial meeting with key stakeholders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Government House in Alausa, Ikeja on Sunday.
Dressed in a traditional white attire, MC Oluomo agreed to hand over the reins of power to Mustapha Adekunle (Sego), the current Treasurer of the union in the state. The move follows the mounting pressure on Oluomo to contest for the union’s presidency, especially in the wake of the incapacitation of one of the factional Presidents, Tajudeen Agbede, who is reportedly bedridden due to a stroke.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, along with other prominent figures such as Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Commissioner for Transportation Sola Giwa, and Commissioner of Police in Lagos, participated in the critical meeting. The Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Lagos, Dapo Amao, was also present, along with the current executive members of the union in the state.
The Lagos State chapter of NURTW has been embroiled in a crisis, marked by a vote of no confidence passed by some union leaders on MC Oluomo shortly after his re-election for a second term a month ago. Reports indicate that Oluomo’s decision to step down stems from intensified pressure exerted by influential figures, including Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, who personally urged him to resign or face potential embarrassment from his loyalists.
Furthermore, it has been disclosed that a significant portion of branch chairmen in Lagos has ceased remitting funds to the union’s state coffers, contributing to Oluomo’s financial challenges. This political shake-up within the NURTW in Lagos marks a notable transition, signaling changes in leadership and addressing factional disputes that have gripped the union in recent times.
