Nigerian entertainer Afeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has initiated legal proceedings against actress Iyabo Ojo, alleging the dissemination of false and defamatory content on her Instagram account. Naira Marley’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo, sent a letter to Ojo outlining the accusations made in a September 2023 post.
The post in question accused Naira Marley of engaging in both spiritual and physical dealings with the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, widely known as Mohbad. The lawyer further claimed that Ojo accused Naira Marley of causing mental harm to Mohbad, whom she referred to as a brother.
In response to these allegations, Naira Marley’s attorney is seeking redress in the form of N500 million in damages and a public apology. The legal counsel specified that the apology must be posted on Iyabo Ojo’s official Instagram account and published in a national daily.
The letter issued by Naira Marley’s legal team warned that failure to comply with these conditions would result in a lawsuit being filed against Iyabo Ojo. The lawyer emphasized the serious nature of the accusations, stating that the false publication has caused colossal damage to Naira Marley’s reputation.
The letter read in part, “Your publication of the above words on the internet, which is readily accessible to users of the system, constituted a very serious libel and has caused our client colossal damage to his reputation.”
Naira Marley, recognized for his status as an internationally renowned British and Nigerian singer/artist with over seven million followers, has previously been engaged by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to use his platforms to discourage substance abuse among his followers and Nigerian youths. The legal action underscores the gravity with which Naira Marley views the alleged defamation and its impact on his public image.
