The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has expressed its commitment to partnering with the Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Authority (OGFTZA) in the development of Industrial Parks in the Niger Delta region. The Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, made this announcement during a visit by a delegation from OGFTZA, led by its Managing Director, Senator Tijani Kaura, to the Commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt.
Ogbuku emphasized the significant role that Industrial Parks play in the sustainable development value chain, citing their potential for generating positive economic impacts. He explained, “Having industrial parks is very key in the development of a society like ours. Partnering to have an Oil and Gas Free Trade Zone Park would achieve a lot. It will reduce the cost of production in the industries and enterprises that we intend to attract to the Niger Delta region. It will also promote entrepreneurship.”
Furthermore, Ogbuku highlighted the advantages of having multiple industries in one park, stating that it benefits both companies and the local population. He stressed the importance of industrialization in the Niger Delta to create employment opportunities for the region’s youths and women.
Ogbuku expressed confidence that collaborating with OGFTZA in the development of Industrial Parks would encourage investment, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to wealth creation and employment in the Niger Delta. He emphasized the need to diversify the region’s economy beyond oil and gas, mentioning a shift towards agriculture and information technology.
“We are looking at a future Silicon Valley in the Niger Delta region,” Ogbuku stated, indicating the Commission’s vision for technological development.
In response, OGFTZA’s Managing Director, Senator Tijani Kaura, acknowledged the pivotal roles both organizations play in driving sustainable development in the Niger Delta. He emphasized the necessity of collaboration between NDDC and OGFTZA, particularly in establishing Industrial Parks. Kaura believed that such parks would expedite development, create wealth, engage youths, and reduce unrest in the region.
Kaura proposed the establishment of a Technical Committee to work out the details of the partnership between NDDC and OGFTZA for the Industrial Parks initiative.
The collaboration between NDDC and OGFTZA reflects a strategic effort to promote sustainable economic development and diversification in the Niger Delta, moving beyond traditional oil and gas activities.
