The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has pledged to strengthen its collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, to enhance public awareness, promote credible reporting, and support sustainable development initiatives across the state.
This commitment was made by Abasiandikan Nkono, the NDDC representative for Akwa Ibom State, when he received the State Working Committee (SWC) of the NUJ, led by its Chairman, Nsibiet John, during a courtesy visit to his office in Uyo on Tuesday.
Nkono commended the NUJ leadership for its professionalism and achievements within a short time in office, describing the team’s approach as a “blueprint of success” driven by focus and integrity.
He explained that the NDDC had transitioned from a “transactional” to a “transformational” model under his leadership, prioritizing sustainable infrastructure, youth empowerment, and impactful community projects across local government areas of Akwa Ibom State.
“We have redefined the Commission’s approach to service delivery. Our focus is on sustainable development, not quick fixes,” Nkono stated. “Journalists must remain factual, balanced, and objective, as credible reporting strengthens public confidence in governance.”
The NDDC commissioner highlighted several achievements, including the training of over 10,000 Niger Delta youths in various vocational skills. Each trainee, he noted, receives a ₦50,000 monthly stipend for one year, along with starter packs to begin their businesses.
Nkono also revealed that three Akwa Ibom indigenes had recently been awarded foreign scholarships to study in the United Kingdom under the Commission’s scholarship scheme, while more students are benefiting from new local scholarship initiatives.
Additionally, he disclosed ongoing intervention projects such as road construction, streetlight installations, and community infrastructure upgrades across the state.
In his remarks, NUJ Chairman Nsibiet John lauded Nkono’s dedication to development and his open-door policy towards journalists. He expressed confidence in the NDDC’s leadership and pledged the Union’s full cooperation in promoting developmental journalism that aligns with the Commission’s vision.
John further briefed Nkono on preparations for the forthcoming 2025 NUJ Press Week, seeking NDDC’s partnership to ensure its success. He also highlighted new welfare and capacity-building programmes introduced by the Union, including the provision of work tools and modernization of the NUJ Secretariat.
“We are proud of your commitment to service and your accessibility to the media,” John said. “The NUJ will continue to support the NDDC’s developmental agenda for the benefit of the people of Akwa Ibom.”
The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their shared goal of fostering sustainable development, responsible journalism, and transparent governance across the Niger Delta.
