The Nigeria Customs Service, Area 2, Onne, Rivers State, announced on Friday that it had generated a total revenue of N246 billion within the span of ten months. The Comptroller of Customs in the command, Comptroller Baba Imam, shared this achievement during a press briefing held in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
Comptroller Baba Imam disclosed that for the month of October, the command had surpassed its monthly revenue target by generating N38 billion, which exceeded the set goal of N28 billion by over N10 billion.
The command’s successful revenue collection was accompanied by various contraband seizures, including nine containers containing items such as 724 bales of used clothing, 1805 pieces of used tires, four vehicles used for concealing 76.9kg of special cannabis, and 2070 cartons of tomato paste, with a total duty paid value estimated at N1,162,424,371.00 billion.
Furthermore, one imported container from the United States, which had been declared to contain household effects and one used vehicle, was found to conceal one pistol and 100 rounds of ammunition. Two suspects connected to the ammunition smuggling were arrested and subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.
Comptroller Imam emphasized the importance of customs operations in enforcing national laws and acting as a deterrent to others. He praised his team for their vigilance and commitment to their duties and stated that the command would collaborate with other agencies to contribute to making the country a safer place to live. Comptroller Imam also highlighted the significant increase in revenue collection compared to the previous year, showcasing a substantial increment of N44,145,889,008.65 for the year 2023.
