The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly declared a nationwide strike in response to the Federal Government’s failure to address their demands. The labor unions made this announcement on Tuesday, setting the commencement date for the strike as October 3, 2023.
This decision was reached following separate National Executive Council meetings held by both unions in Abuja.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, addressed the media first during a joint press briefing in Abuja. He expressed that the government’s lackadaisical approach in meeting the demands raised by the unions left them with no alternative but to call for an indefinite strike.
Ajaero further emphasized that the executive councils of both NLC and TUC had taken into account the government’s stance, particularly in response to the subsidy removal policy, which reinforced the necessity of the strike.
Festus Osifo, the President of the Trade Union Congress, echoed the sentiment, stating that they had resolved that beginning from October 3rd, all workers are expected to withdraw their services as part of the strike action.
