The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has firmly denied the circulating reports claiming that it has initiated an indefinite nationwide strike.
Recent online reports had indicated that the union had commenced its planned strike following the expiration of its ultimatum to the federal government on Thursday. Organized labor had threatened to disrupt the country’s economy to protest against the government’s failure to meet their demands, particularly regarding adequate palliatives to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal.
The NLC had previously undertaken a two-day warning strike on September 5 and 6, coupled with the issuance of a 14-day ultimatum. Despite government efforts to avert an indefinite strike, the union maintained its stance that it would proceed with the economic shutdown if its demands were not addressed.
In response to the reports of the purported indefinite strike, NLC’s Head of Department for Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, categorically stated, “The report is not true.” He urged the general public to disregard the viral misinformation, emphasizing that no indefinite strike has been initiated at this time.
