Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has pledged support to Libya as the nation grapples with the aftermath of devastating floods triggered by the Mediterranean storm Daniel. Tinubu expressed his condolences to the Libyan government and people and offered Nigeria’s unwavering solidarity during these trying times.
The floods have resulted in extensive damage and loss of life, particularly in the eastern port city of Derna, where over 5,300 bodies have been recovered, and more than 34,000 people have been displaced. Experts attribute the severity of the disaster not only to the intensity of the storm but also to Libya’s vulnerability due to over a decade of internal conflicts that weakened critical infrastructure.
External assistance from Turkey, Egypt, and Italy started reaching Derna two days after the disaster, highlighting the logistical challenges faced in delivering aid to the affected areas. Additional international emergency teams and humanitarian organizations are expected to join relief efforts soon.
President Tinubu’s statement emphasized the shared grief between Nigeria and Libya over the loss of lives, homes, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure. He wished a speedy recovery to all those injured in the tragic incident.
The devastating flooding has underscored the urgent need for assistance and international cooperation to help Libya recover from this monumental disaster.
