In a swift operation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) apprehended two special constables caught red-handed demanding money from a Dutch rider on the Iseyin-Ogbomosho road in Oyo State. A viral video, lasting less than two minutes, captured the officers flagging down the female rider and pressuring her to provide them with money or valuables.
The Dutch rider, en route to Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, seemed perplexed by the officers’ requests in Pidgin English. The officers, persistently asking for something in the video, were met with the rider’s confusion. In response to their insistence, the officers explicitly demanded money, to which the Dutch rider questioned, “Why?”
Expressing strong disapproval of the incident, Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the police force, released a statement on Friday. Adebola Hamzat, the Oyo police spokesperson, has initiated a disciplinary procedure against the implicated special constables. The police authority has condemned their actions and ordered sanctions not only for the constables but also for their supervising divisional police officer.
Adejobi emphasized that such behavior is considered “unpolice” and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Special constables, who volunteer part-time for the NPF, are intended to contribute to community policing efforts. These individuals wear uniforms resembling those of regular police officers.
