President Bola Tinubu is set to unveil an Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System and Geospatial Data Repository in Nigeria. The initiative, developed in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), aims to strengthen civil registration data collection, processing, and dissemination, and provide timely access to vital statistics.
Nasir Kwarra, Chairman of the National Population Commission, highlighted that this initiative aligns with Nigeria’s commitment to enhance civil registration and vital statistics systems over a ten-year period, from 2023 to 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The system, known as e-CRVS (Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics), offers transformative outcomes in civil registration by integrating data from various systems to securely store data cost-effectively. It covers a range of vital events, including birth registration, stillbirth registration, marriage notification, divorce notification, migration, and death. The e-CRVS system provides digital certificates, accessible verification platforms for registered organizations, and a central management system for collated civil registrations, aiding in decision-making.
This shift from traditional paper-based recording of vital events to a state-of-the-art digital solution marks a significant change in the way vital events are recorded, tracked, and analyzed in Nigeria. The geospatial data repository, along with the electronic CRVS, represents a significant leap in technology and data management for the country.
President Bola Tinubu will play a pivotal role in the launch of these initiatives, emphasizing the government’s commitment to advancing civil registration and geospatial data systems for better planning, decision-making, and sustainable development.
