In response to the recent hike in petrol price from N195 to N617, devaluation of the naira, and other anti-poor policies of the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government, Nigerians have taken to the streets in Kano State to voice their discontent. The protest, which began on Tuesday, was coordinated by the Joint Action Front (JAF) and saw citizens expressing their frustration and concern over the current state of affairs in the country.
The demonstration was a prelude to the planned nationwide action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on August 2, 2023, and received support from various civic organizations, including the Alliance for Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB) and Coalition for Revolution (CORE). These groups came together in a joint declaration to express solidarity with the NLC’s call for mass action against the government’s “wicked and neoliberal policies.”
The civic organizations highlighted the urgent need to reverse the recent petrol price hike, naira devaluation, and other policies that have burdened the Nigerian masses. They emphasized the importance of unity among the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in engaging with the government and mobilizing for the upcoming mass action.
The protesters in Kano State and their allies nationwide are determined to have their voices heard and to push for changes that will alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. As the demonstrations continue, they hope for a reversal of the recent policies that have made life increasingly challenging for the citizens.
