The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported that in 2022, the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) collectively generated N1.92 trillion in internally generated revenue (IGR). This represents a 2 percent year-on-year growth compared to the N1.89 trillion IGR recorded in 2021.
Lagos State led the way with the highest IGR, generating N651.15 billion, which accounted for 34 percent of the total IGR in 2022. However, this figure marks a 14 percent decrease from the N753.46 billion generated in 2021.
The top five states with the highest IGR in 2022 were:
1. Lagos – N651.15 billion
2. Rivers – N172.8 billion
3. FCT – N124.4 billion
4. Ogun – N120.6 billion
5. Delta – N85.9 billion
On the other hand, Kebbi State had the lowest IGR, generating N9.15 billion, followed by Taraba with N10.23 billion, Yobe with N10.46 billion, and Ebonyi with N12.4 billion.
Regional Analysis:
– The South-West region recorded the highest IGR turnover in 2022, with N908.25 billion.
– The South-South region followed with N377.9 billion.
– The North-Central region had N246.4 billion.
– The North-West region generated N186.4 billion.
– The South-East region recorded N114.5 billion.
– The North-East region closed the year with N92 billion.
Lagos State’s IGR accounted for 72 percent of the entire IGR of the South-West region and 34 percent of Nigeria’s total IGR. Despite the decrease in Lagos State’s IGR, it still surpassed the combined IGR of the entire northern states (N524.83 billion) and exceeded that of the South-South and South-East regions combined (N492.53 billion).
