The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, is set to undergo medical treatment abroad for injuries sustained during a violent scuffle in Imo State.
Comrade Joe Ajaero had been in Owerri on November 1 to rally Imo state workers for a peaceful protest against alleged violations and abuses of workers’ rights and privileges by the state government. Unfortunately, the planned demonstration took a violent turn, as reports emerged of thugs targeting the protesters and labor leaders.
According to NLC’s Publicity Secretary, Benson Upah, Comrade Joe Ajaero’s injuries are of such a nature that they cannot be adequately treated at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri. As a result, arrangements are being made for the NLC president to receive medical treatment abroad. The incident highlights the intensity of the scuffle and the injuries suffered by the labor leader in his efforts to champion workers’ rights.
