Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has alleged that operatives of the Nigerian Police Force threatened him to say his last prayers during the period he was taken into custody in Owerri, Imo State capital. The incident reportedly occurred when Ajaero led workers to protest over unpaid salaries in Imo State, resulting in police brutality.
The NLC and the Trade Union Congress declared a nationwide strike following the reported incident. The Presidency, in response, accused Ajaero of playing partisan politics in Imo State ahead of the governorship election.
Addressing the press in Abuja on Friday, Ajaero claimed that the police threatened him during his custody, adding to the controversy surrounding the incident. The NLC President’s allegations raise concerns about the use of force against protesters and the treatment of labor leaders by security forces.
