The National Women’s Wing of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take swift action to alleviate the untold hardship caused by the removal of subsidies, which has led to a significant increase in fuel prices. Mrs. Comfort Otobo, the National Chairperson of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), emphasized the urgency of addressing the suffering faced by workers and Nigerians.
Speaking at a zonal workshop organized by the National Women Commission of AUPCTRE in Jos, Plateau, Otobo highlighted that one of the union’s primary objectives is to educate its members. She stressed the importance of knowledge as a catalyst for societal development and mentioned that the commission has been actively facilitating training sessions for women within the union, underscoring that education is an ongoing process.
Otobo announced that the next training phase would involve state chairpersons and secretaries of women’s committees, building upon the current training for the national women commission executives and zonal chairpersons and secretaries. She encouraged participants to actively engage in the workshop and absorb the knowledge being shared.
Mrs. Rauta Dakok, the Plateau Head of Service, conveyed Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s commitment to appointing more women and youth in future rounds of appointments. She commended AUPCTRE’s national women commission for choosing the theme “Advancing Women Participation in Trade Unionism at Workplace” for the education program, considering it both relevant and timely.
Dakok underscored the significance of updating one’s knowledge and emphasized that education is pivotal to success. She encouraged civil servants and women in particular to continuously empower themselves through learning.
AUPCTRE President, Mr. Benjamin Anthony, stressed the importance of gender equality and equity in workplaces. He highlighted the need for gender mainstreaming to empower women at their workplaces. Anthony expressed the union’s commitment to providing continuous education and awareness to its members, with a focus on promoting gender issues and advancing gender equality.
