In a recent development, the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja has been temporarily closed due to a runway incident involving a Boeing 733 aircraft with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BYQ. The incident occurred at approximately 10:47 am (Local Time) on November 12, 2023, during the landing of a Lagos-Abuja flight operated by Aerocontractors.
The aircraft, while taxiing on Runway A4, experienced a complication as its nose wheel became stuck to the ground. Fortunately, no fatalities or injuries were reported, and passengers were safely disembarked from the aircraft. Current efforts are underway to remove the aircraft from the runway.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the incident. Dr. James Odaudu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, confirmed the occurrence and assured the public of the absence of injuries or fatalities.
“The aircraft upon landing at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja from Lagos and in a bid to exit the runway via A4 had its nose wheel stuck in the grass verge with its fuselage on the runway,” stated Dr. Odaudu. “Consequently, the runway was closed pending the towing of the aircraft from the runway. There was no injury or fatality.”
He further urged the general public to contribute any information, including pictures, videos, or recordings, to assist in conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Passengers and stakeholders are advised to stay updated on official announcements regarding the reopening of the airport runway.
