Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has called on those behind the sit-at-home protests in the southeast region to halt the exercise. The call comes as the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) took action to close shops and banks in adherence to Governor Peter Mbah’s instruction last week, warning of sanctions for those adhering to the sit-at-home order.
Governor Mbah had deemed the sit-at-home order illegal and promised strict penalties for violators. In response to the protests, the Enugu State Government announced that affected shops would remain closed until their owners produced tax clearance certificates and other relevant documents. The government applauded civil society organizations and residents for peaceful demonstrations against the sit-at-home orders.
The Enugu State Government’s directive was enforced on Monday, July 24, 2023, resulting in the sealing of non-compliant business premises and shops. The sealed businesses will remain closed for one week, after which their owners must provide their current tax clearance certificates and revenue documents for review and potential reopening. The consideration process will commence on Friday, July 28, 2023, at the Enugu State Capital Development Authority (ECTDA) headquarters.
In a separate incident, a joint operation involving the Nigerian Army and operatives of the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) resulted in the death of many gunmen who attempted to ambush security forces. The operation took place in Owoko community, Mmiata Anam, Anambra East Local Government.
As the situation in the region continues to evolve, authorities and stakeholders are working to restore peace and stability, while addressing the concerns and grievances of the people.
