The leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has firmly rejected the involvement of former vice president and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the party’s affairs related to the Supreme Court challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
During a world press conference held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja last Thursday, Atiku called on the presidential candidates of the Labour Party and NNPP, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso respectively, to join forces with him to expose what he referred to as the ‘dirty’ secrets of President Tinubu.
Addressing the media at the NNPP national secretariat in Abuja on Friday, the acting deputy national chairman, Prince Nwaeze Onu, emphasized that the NNPP is not currently involved in any court proceedings and does not wish to be perceived as an interloper in a case unrelated to the party. He stated that the NNPP remains focused on internal matters and does not want to be entangled in issues concerning other political parties.
Nwaeze clarified the NNPP’s decision to refrain from approaching the court, citing a love for the country as a motivating factor. He said, “Since we are not in court for one reason or the other because we love the country more than ourselves. And that is why we do not wish to engage in things that we are not part of ab initio. We need fairness, we need equity, and we will allow the judiciary to take its course.”
The acting deputy national chairman warned against external interference in the party’s internal affairs, urging those attempting to meddle to steer clear. He expressed gratitude to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its commitment to democracy’s growth in Nigeria and acknowledged the judiciary’s role in upholding the rule of law. Nwaeze reassured Nigerians of NNPP’s dedication to promoting democracy and ensuring its benefits for all.
