Former President Olusegun Obasanjo engaged in a closed-door meeting with Ohanaeze Ndigbo chieftains in Owerri, Imo State. The meeting, held at the residence of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide President General, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, addressed “issues of mutual interests.”
Okey Emuchay, the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, shared that the meeting was symbolic and crucial, leading to fruitful deliberations. While details of the discussions were not disclosed, Emuchay mentioned that the Ohanaeze President General expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for his significant contributions, including ending the civil war with the slogan “no victor, no vanquished,” and addressing external debts and economic recovery during his presidency.
Emuchay further stated that Iwuanyanwu advocated for the recognition of Obasanjo’s sacrifices, suggesting the erection of monuments in his name. The former President was accompanied by Chief Oyewole Fasawe, while attendees from the Igbo community included Kema Chikwe, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, Fidelis Ozichukwu, and Chief Tony Ukasanya.
Iwuanyanwu has been actively championing the cause of Ndigbo, advocating for the development of the South East as a major industrial hub in the West African sub-region. His efforts include seeking the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and encouraging investment in the region.
