In a concerted effort, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) has launched a military operation to locate and rescue the abducted Benue State Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Hon Mathew Abo.
Hon Abo was kidnapped last Sunday by unidentified gunmen who invaded his residence in Zaki Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State. The family, in a distressing situation, revealed that the abductors had demanded a ransom of N60 million.
As part of the ongoing search operation, OPWS, in collaboration with other sister security agencies, is actively engaged in efforts to secure the release of Hon Abo from the kidnappers’ den. The troops, under the leadership of Major General Sunday Igbinowanhia, the Force Commander of OPWS, are determined to bring the Commissioner back to safety.
A source, speaking under anonymity, emphasized the dedication of officers and men involved in the operation. The directive is clear – to work diligently towards rescuing the kidnapped Commissioner. The heads of various security agencies, in coordination with Major General Sunday Igbinowanhia, have expressed their unwavering commitment to ensuring Hon Abo’s freedom.
Addressing the speculation surrounding a ransom demand, a military officer stated unequivocally that OPWS does not negotiate with insurgents and bandits. The focus remains on intensive combing of the surrounding areas and forests. The military, in conjunction with other security agencies in the Joint Operations Area, is confident of delivering positive news in the near future.
Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the joint nature of the operation, highlighting the combined efforts of the military and police in the search for the abducted commissioner.
