In a move aimed at revitalizing the sports sector, the Osun State Government has officially appointed Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund.
The appointment, announced by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Kola Adewusi, underscores the administration’s resolve to inject innovation, transparency, and global influence into the management and funding of sports development across the state.
According to Adewusi, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration is committed to repositioning sports as a key driver of youth empowerment, tourism, and economic growth in Osun. The government plans to use the newly established Sports Trust Fund to attract both local and international investors who can support the growth of various sporting activities and infrastructure in the state.
“The Sports Trust Fund will create an avenue for philanthropists, corporate organizations, and sports enthusiasts to contribute to the state’s sports development,” Adewusi said. “Davido has graciously accepted to chair the Fund, and we are confident that his global reach and influence will open new doors of opportunity for Osun’s sports industry.”
He further revealed that plans are in advanced stages for the creation of the Osun State Sports Commission, a central body that will coordinate sports administration, policy development, and sustainable funding.
Adewusi also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to completing the renovation and rehabilitation of the Osogbo Township Stadium, noting that the project will transform the facility into a world-class arena meeting Olympic standards.
“The ongoing renovation of the Osogbo Stadium will be completed soon,” he said. “Once finished, it will be capable of hosting both national and international sporting events. This is part of Governor Adeleke’s broader vision to make Osun a hub of sports excellence in Nigeria.”
Davido’s appointment has been met with excitement among sports enthusiasts and the general public. Many believe that his leadership and global brand will not only draw attention to Osun’s sports programs but also attract international collaborations and sponsorships.
The Afrobeats icon, who hails from the Adeleke family of Ede in Osun State, has long been a vocal advocate for youth empowerment and development. His involvement in the Sports Trust Fund is expected to serve as a bridge between entertainment, sports, and investment opportunities in the state.
The Sports Trust Fund will oversee initiatives aimed at discovering young talents, funding grassroots competitions, and upgrading training facilities to international standards.
Observers have described the initiative as a forward-thinking approach that could redefine the sports landscape in Nigeria if implemented effectively.
