On Monday, a tragic incident occurred in Egbu village, located in the Patigi local government area of Kwara State, as a boat carrying a minimum of 100 individuals, including a father and his four children, capsized. Reports indicate that numerous people lost their lives, plunging the entire local government area into mourning. The incident unfolded when the boat was unexpectedly overwhelmed by powerful river waves, causing it to collide with a tree and overturn, resulting in multiple fatalities and leaving several others injured.
The victims had been returning from a wedding ceremony held in the neighboring Egboti village of Niger State. It was revealed by sources in the village that the deceased individuals had departed from Kpada village in Kwara State to attend the marriage celebration in Egboti village. Disturbingly, the tragedy claimed the lives of 69 individuals from Egbu village, 36 from Gakpan village, and four from Kpada village in the Patigi local government area.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, Okasanmi Ajayi, announced that the command had dispatched the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the Patigi local government area to gather more information regarding the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) acknowledged the sparsity of details available at the time but assured that the command would provide comprehensive information once it was obtained from the area.
