As the 2023 general election approaches, 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have left the party to join the Young Progressives Party, YPP.
It was recalled that last month (July), the YPP welcomed Senator Bassey Albert Akpan, lawmaker representing Akwa-Ibom North-East Senatorial District, to its fold. He is the governorship candidate of the YPP in the state in respect of the 2023 election.
According to Barrister Usenobong Akpabio, the State Chairman of the defection and inter-party committee of YPP, many of the new party members are loyalists of Senator Akpan.
“As at the day Obong Bassey Akpan declared publicly for the governorship in YPP, we wanted to showcase them (defectors), but there was no opportunity to do it. As of that day I had counted 580 officers,” Barr. Akpabio said.
“The defection is ongoing. A lot of officers are leaving the PDP. Like on Monday 15th of August, two officers, and a woman leader from Onna left the PDP and joined us.
“I have their records I have their resignation letters. They have formally enrolled in the YPP as members.”
