A new security report from Beacon Consulting, a security risk management and intelligence organization, has revealed that more than 800 people were killed in attacks across Nigeria in June 2023. The report documented 460 incidents, including 239 abductions, which occurred in 234 local government areas in Nigeria’s 36 states and the capital, Abuja.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s promise to prioritize security in the country, the first month of his administration has witnessed a high number of attacks. The government continues to struggle to find effective solutions to the incessant attacks carried out by Islamist groups, bandits, and other criminal gangs, even after appointing new security chiefs.
In a separate series of attacks on communities in central Benue and Plateau states, nearly 40 people were killed on Saturday. The police in Benue state have reported that efforts to recover additional corpses are ongoing.
The alarming number of attacks and the rising death toll highlight the urgent need for improved security measures and effective strategies to address the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria.
