The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reportedly plunged into a fresh crisis, with links to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Governor Nyesom Wike, both recently listed as ministers in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet. The loyalty of Umar Ililya Damagum, the acting national chairman of the PDP, is now under scrutiny.
Sources within Atiku’s camp strongly believe that Damagum is aligned with Wike, the former governor of Rivers state. Wike’s rebellion against the PDP, along with his G-5 cohorts, caused significant political damage to the party, especially during the general elections. Wike’s open support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu instead of Atiku Abubakar reportedly contributed to Atiku’s loss, possibly marking the end of his pursuit for the presidency since his first attempt in the early 90s.
A source within Atiku’s camp revealed that Damagum and Gov Ahmadu Fintiri, who governs Adamawa, Atiku’s home state, have been accused of being too close to Wike. This has sparked concern among Atiku’s loyalists, including Sule Lamido, former governor of Jigawa, Babangida Aliyu, former governor of Niger, and Adamu Maina Waziri, former minister, who have taken action against Damagum.
Apart from the loyalty issue, Damagum has also faced allegations of misappropriation and mismanagement of funds left behind by the former chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.
The situation has added to the challenges facing the PDP, as the party grapples with internal conflicts and attempts to rebuild after recent electoral setbacks.
