A fresh round of crisis is looming within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as stakeholders battle over the succession plan for the suspended national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu. Since Ayu’s suspension following the PDP’s loss in the presidential election in March, Umar Damagum, the deputy national chairman (north), has been serving in an acting capacity.
However, attempts to replace the suspended national chairman have intensified, causing deep divisions within the party. Key figures aligned with Atiku Abubakar and those loyal to the suspended Ayu are both vying to have their candidate emerge as the new chairman.
Adding to the complexity, associates of Nyesom Wike, who is expected to become a minister in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, are determined to thwart Atiku’s plans.
Meanwhile, it is widely believed among party leaders and members that the new national chairman will come from the north-central zone. Atiku’s candidate for the position is former Kwara State governor, Bukola Saraki, while Wike and his faction are supporting Jerry Gana.
The race for the PDP’s national chairmanship is intensifying, and the outcome will undoubtedly shape the party’s future direction and dynamics, making it a crucial development to watch in the coming days.
