Governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convened in Abuja on Monday, issuing a call to President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action to quell the ongoing national crisis. Led by Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Muhammed, the governors expressed grave concerns over Nigeria’s current trajectory, likening it to the economic turmoil experienced in Venezuela.
Speaking to reporters at the Oyo Governors’ lodge in Asokoro, Governor Bala Muhammed underscored the urgency of addressing the economic and security challenges plaguing the nation. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts between the Federal Government and sub-national governments to devise lasting solutions to the crises, ensuring relief for Nigerians grappling with hardship.
Highlighting their commitment to enhancing security measures, the PDP Governors reiterated their longstanding call for the establishment of State Police, albeit with appropriate safeguards to prevent potential abuses of power.
Moreover, the Forum decried the devaluation of the Naira and urged monetary and fiscal authorities to explore viable solutions to stabilize the currency and mitigate the adverse effects on the economy.
Governor Bala Muhammed stressed the importance of constructive criticism in holding the government accountable for its policies, emphasizing the PDP’s role in advocating for the welfare of all Nigerians. While acknowledging the electorate’s decision to elect the All Progressives Congress (APC) into office, the governors affirmed their duty to provide constructive opposition and propose alternative solutions to address pressing national issues.
In response to questions from journalists, Governor Bala Muhammed reiterated the need for bipartisan collaboration to mitigate the impact of government policies on the populace. He emphasized ongoing efforts within the Nigeria Governors Forum and the National Economic Council to alleviate the hardships faced by citizens, including the activation of food reserves to support vulnerable populations.
As Nigeria grapples with multifaceted challenges, the PDP Governors’ Forum remains committed to advocating for policies that prioritize the well-being and prosperity of all Nigerians, underscoring the imperative for concerted action and cooperation across political divides.
