PDP Leaders Insist Ibadan Convention Will Proceed as Scheduled Despite Internal Tension

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Convention Planning Committee and Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, has reaffirmed that the party’s highly anticipated elective convention will hold in Ibadan as originally planned.

Fintiri gave the assurance on Thursday night after a crucial leadership meeting held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. The gathering brought together several top figures of the PDP, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and former Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Tanimu Turaki, among other influential stakeholders.

Addressing journalists after the closed-door session, Fintiri revealed that the meeting involved extensive deliberations on the future of the party and the importance of a united front ahead of the convention. According to him, the decisions reached were aimed at strengthening internal cohesion and ensuring that the PDP emerges from the convention more organized and ready to reposition itself in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“We’ve just concluded a very crucial stakeholders’ meeting where a number of important resolutions were made. I want to state clearly that we are heading to Ibadan for our convention, and that convention remains sacrosanct,” Fintiri firmly declared.

Attempts by reporters to extract further details on internal party issues were unsuccessful, as the governor’s security aides quickly ushered him away, signaling the sensitivity of ongoing political matters within the party.

The certainty expressed by Fintiri is expected to calm rising speculations about potential disruptions or changes to the venue, especially amid concerns voiced by some party chieftains in recent weeks. Party loyalists and observers now look toward Ibadan, where the outcome of the convention is expected to determine the future direction of the PDP.
