The People Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has expressed concern over the reported influx of foreign nationals into the state’s 16 local government councils. The party suggests that this development could be linked to the recent escalation of aggressive messages between Niger Republic and Nigeria, following ECOWAS’ threat of military action in response to the coup in Niger.
According to the PDP, these foreign nationals have been engaging in activities such as Okada (motorcycle) riding, begging, vegetable farming, vegetable sales, and scavenging across different parts of the state. The party believes that if this influx is not addressed urgently, it could pose security threats and disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the state.
The PDP’s statement, signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Tunji Moronfoye, calls on the Kwara State government, led by Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, to take steps to regulate and register these foreign nationals. The statement highlights the need for security consciousness, particularly in light of the escalating tensions between Niger and Nigeria.
The PDP also points out a rise in recent kidnappings and murders in Kwara State and appeals for the state governor’s attention to governance and security issues. The party suggests that the state governor should collaborate with the Nigerian Immigration Services, if necessary, to address the influx of foreign nationals.
The statement also questions the state governor’s alleged reluctance to address the issue before the 2023 general elections, citing political considerations. However, with the elections concluded, the PDP emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the welfare and safety of the state’s residents.
The PDP’s statement concludes by urging the Kwara State governor to focus on governance, security, and welfare issues, and to consider the potential implications of the influx of foreign nationals amidst regional tensions.
