The Anambra State Police Command announced the arrest of a couple engaged in trafficking a one-month-old baby from Lagos. The interception occurred at the River Niger Bridgehead in Onitsha on December 17, 2023. Although the identities of the couple were not disclosed, the arrest was made as they were traveling in a luxury bus belonging to a popular transport company.
According to the statement issued by DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, the arrest was prompted by the observation of a co-passenger. The passenger noticed that the mother of the baby could not breastfeed the child despite its cries for food during the journey.
The concerned co-passenger promptly made a call to the Anambra Police control room hotline in Awka, providing information about the situation. The police at Bridgehead in Onitsha acted on the information and intercepted the couple, leading to their arrest.
The statement did not provide further details about the motives or circumstances surrounding the trafficking attempt. However, the arrest underscores the importance of public vigilance and cooperation in combating human trafficking and other illicit activities. The police are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the case to unravel the details and ensure the appropriate legal actions are taken against those involved in the trafficking attempt.
