The Nigeria police have successfully foiled an attempted attack on the residence of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, in Yola, Adamawa State. According to the spokesperson for the Adamawa State police command, Suleiman Nguroje, two suspected Boko Haram terrorists were arrested on Sunday in connection with the planned attack. The suspects, Jibrilla Mohammed and his accomplice, were handed over to the military for further investigation due to the nature of their attempted crime, which falls under terrorism.
The former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 presidential election, is currently challenging the election of President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, following his defeat in the February 25 poll.
Earlier on Monday, former aide to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, raised alarm on Twitter about a threat to the life of Atiku Abubakar. He disclosed that a man acting suspiciously was detected at Atiku’s residence and was apprehended. The suspect, Jibrilla Mohammed, later confessed to being a member of the dreaded Boko Haram sect and revealed a plot to bomb Atiku’s residence, as well as faculties at the American University of Nigeria and the Modibbo Adama Central Mosque in Yola.
Given the seriousness of the incident, Omokri called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation, and he urged the Federal Government to increase security around Atiku Abubakar. He emphasized that this incident should not be treated lightly, especially considering the current state of the nation, and called for transparency in the investigation to ensure the safety of the former vice president and the public.
